@Markus Klein I want to know how the hell this won any awards at all. Amy Adams acting is the only good part of the entire movie, and she was playing a dull depressed broken unlikable character, so excellent acting didn't do any favors. The whole cast of characters was unlikable, boring and trite modern stereotypes of wiseass superior woman walking all over beta males and blustery military white guys who deign to tell her what to do, only to have the tables turned on them. and the ending ? LMAO! She calls up the Chinese general and tells him what his wife told him on her deathbed? AND THAT SAVES THE DAY? LOL. OK! SURE! You do you.
I miss the sci fi with actual interesting and likeable characters, think The Thing by John Carpenter, The Abyss by James Cameron, Alien by Ridley Scott. Realistic likeable characters with entertaining writing. Not Mary Sues invented by post-modern feminist losers spewing pithy and self aggrandizing remarks, and beta male doormats.
Actually the other good thing about this movie was that it wasn't 2 second cuts. Most modern movies don't have scenes longer than 2 seconds and this one had some that went on for dozens of seconds amazingly. That was refreshing. But still, not even CLOSE to enough. Especially for the hyperbolic comments like "masterpiece". Hell even Cloud Atlas and Interstellar were each better than this. Fans of this movie probably love Gravity too, Lol.

I tried watching this when it first came out, I was about 17 and I got bored after half an hour so I turned it off. I just watched it again today and my god I wish I kept watching, it's an incredible film. Maybe I needed to be older to truly appreciate this masterpiece.

I think Netflix should have a comments section in their app/website for like-minded people like us to discuss how amazing a movie is. Instead, I had to come to the movie trailer's comments section on youtube to say: how much of an experience this movie. Totally captivating. Not your average sci fi movie, this one's deep and kinda alters the way you perceive things. Kudos to the director for doing such an amazing job at capturing the moments in its pure perfection!

@medexamtoolsdotcom actually you said and I just watched it and I still like arrival better of course it is adapted in a format smoothly more-based to us in our current Denny which works better graphically speaking and it is a lot more pleasing regardless but there’s also the fact that this is based on a actual book and the book was released a year after the first movie which in regards takes a year to usually make a book so I’m pretty sure maybe the movie was an hour before they started in creating the book meaning that they probably didn’t exactly copy it I think it was more of a works better type thing I was actually looking up in case that it was more of an adaptation from the same book but it wasn’t but it feels more proper arrival feels more proper improving and easier to follow along which the 2001 movie just feels like a movie for that time for a time while we literally five years later people are clearly still talking about it and still really freaking like the movie I feel like Better and it feels a lot smoother not saying that the first one isn’t good but it feels awesome little bit racist and off I don’t know but the movie just doesn’t feel good in general clearly because I bought a budget was smaller but still

@Franz Styles and that is because we all have different opinions and feelings towards movies, just because you don't like the way we view some movies doesn't mean we have to agree with you, and it absolutely doesn't mean you are right, the world doesn't work that way, if you can't live with that, you might as well keep your opinion to yourself, frankly, nobody cares about what you think.

I've just watched it for the 5th time, I love this movie. It shows perfectly the idiotism of humanity, media and military but also a light at the end of a tunnel which can be reached only if all of us joined forces. Also, the fact that most of us would never change anything even if we knew the outcome cause we actually appreciate the experience. I'd never change a second with my loved ones even knowing what might happen. AHH this movie always leaves me in pieces.
    P.s. Amy Adams is perfection.

true, but it would probably be harder than this IRL, because firstly, these creatures have physical body, secondly they have limbs that they can move, thirdly they can draw/write, and they are also capable of thinking of other creatures not only as food/predator but also as a dangerous armed creature vs unarmed communicating creature, and they understand other traits and things that we have/understand.

However, I will say it's not for everyone. It's quite a "slow" film, but the slow pacing definitely adds to experience, the mystery, awe and... Other words to describe how good it is.

How tf can people say that this movie was boring? The plot was amazing. Not every movie is about action, blazing guns and crazy stunts. This movie was thought provoking. One of the best sci-fi movies I've ever watched.

@UnbelievabIeMontages saying that china is pictured as a simple aggressive brute in this movie is superficial
the chinese are shown as ingenious, as they used mahjong to talk to the aliens. its just that they are also an overtly patriotic dictatorship, when seeing a possible threat, they overreacted. but then, Shang was shown as the 2nd most important person after Louise, he grasped the very weird situation and made the phone call possible from the future.
saying russia isn't aggressive isn't even funny today anymore

    1. The emotional parts among the family
    2. The twist about the memories
    3. The knowledeges i got after watching, about their method to research
    4. The scenery is beautiful
    5. The simplicity of story and character, and i like that there's no sparkling war with alien

_Parousia,_ a mystical concept related to the second coming of the Christ. It means "arrival" in Greek. The heptapod drawings are sigils from Enochian magick. These sigils are maps of the human brain to activate those portions of the brain. The two heptapods are the right and left hemispheres of the human brain. This is an esoteric film.

@Clorox Bleach Yeah, and that is not deep. There is nothing to 'look into', the movie tries really hard to make sure every idiot understands the meaning and explains it multiple times over and over again which is exactly what makes it long and boring. If you are smart enough, you can tell exactly where everything is going at the 30min mark. But it is not deep. Space and time, different time frames contributing to each other - cliche

@paul dickinson That's kind of Arrival's point - the flashbacks are glimpses of the woman's future. It is a little complicated to understand i'll admit

Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a thought provoking and emotional cerebral thriller, a mystery, like first contact itself. It's not about the Aliens, it's about us, mankind, our perceptions, how we view ourselves and deal with each other. Arrival along with Ryan Eslinger's 2018 film UFO are two of the best cinematic representations of what first contact could look like. Visually stunning with a phenomenal performance from Amy Adams, a great supporting cast, and a smart script make Arrival a not to miss film for all Science Fiction fans!
